While launching ‘Centro’ in India, Palm’s Regional Director (Asia pacific) Olivier Rozay stated, “We launched the first model in last September. This was targeted at the business class. The latest one, Centro, aims to catch up the younger generation. With these two and others in the coming days, we hope to be doing a good business in India.”
With a fun new design, “Centro” is the smallest and lightest Palm phone till date, the company claims. Along with stylish looks, it features voice, text, email, Web, contact and calendar capabilities, and full keyboard, promising easier texting and email management.

The “Centro” includes features such as a one-touch speaker phone, conference calling, Bluetooth connectivity, etc. All conversations can be saved in a chat-style view, just like instant messaging, so that users can see the entire conversation unfold. For multimedia fans, the ‘Pocket Tunes’ feature lets users side-load songs and manage music, audio books, and videos easily. Apart from these, the “Centro” has all the regular Palm smart phone features — including built-in digital camera.

“Centro” is priced at Rs 13,990, and will be available at IT retail stores in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Pune, and Chandigarh. Meanwhile, Palm has associated with mobile networks like Vodafone and Airtel to widen its reach in the country.

The Samsung SGH-G800 5 MP camera phone is equipped with 3x optical zoom, face detection, Xenon flash and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR).

Designed for professionals, the Samsung D880 incorporates a 3.2 megapixel camera, 2.3-inch LCD screen, Bluetooth and stereo FM radio.

Powered by Symbian S60 operating system, the Samsung i550 handset features a GPS Receiver, five hot keys for music, camera, navigation, internet and main menu, the trackball 360 degrees movement on the screen for navigation and selection, 3 mega pixel camera and complaint with Bluetooth audio streaming.

“The B and C category census towns are raking in good business for us. Currently, almost 35 per cent of our business comes from these circles. However, the potential here is immense as only a per cent of the total population actually use mobile phones,” says a spokesperson for Tata Teleservices.

TTS, operating in 20 of the existing 23 mobile telephony circles in India, is using a door-to-door marketing strategy, involving members of gram panchayats and trained market-feelers to make residents of villages and small towns aware of the usefulness of mobile telephony and how the system of pre-paid refills work.

According to the company spokesperson, value-for-money handsets priced between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,400 with a plethora of tariff plans to choose from is what is driving subscription growth in these regions.

Sanjay Kapoor, joint president, mobility, Bharti Airtel, agrees with the trend and says his company had enjoyed a growth of 166 per cent in June of 2005-06 in circle C towns, as compared to a growth of 65 per cent in metros.

“We are concentrating on improving network connectivity in the rural areas along with existing circles we and are spending $1.5 billion this year for that purpose only,” says Kapoor. Airtel is appointing distributors at the tehsil level and using existing channels of fast moving consumer goods in these areas to push their products.
